What the Numbers Actually Mean

The two digits in an IP rating describe two separate things: the first is protection against solid particles, the second against liquids. Higher is not automatically better — it is only better if your environment demands it.

The Ratings That Matter Industrially

  • IP65: dust-tight, protected against low-pressure water jets. Suitable for most indoor warehouses, covered loading docks and general manufacturing.
  • IP66: dust-tight, protected against powerful water jets. Required for outdoor yards, open-sided structures and areas subject to hose-down cleaning.
  • IP69K: dust-tight, protected against high-pressure, high-temperature steam cleaning. Necessary in food processing, pharmaceutical and any facility with mandated sanitation wash-down cycles.

Where Buyers Get It Wrong

The most common costly mistake is specifying IP65 for a food processing plant. Standard IP65 gaskets will not survive repeated 80 °C steam wash-down, and fixtures typically begin failing within 18 months — well inside the warranty period, but with the failure attributed to misapplication rather than defect, leaving the buyer uncovered.

The Cost Difference Is Smaller Than You Think

Moving from IP65 to IP66 typically adds 8–12% to fixture cost. Moving to IP69K adds 25–40%. Against the cost of a full re-fit two years early, the higher rating is almost always the cheaper decision where the environment calls for it.
