Why Spacing Decides Your Lighting Cost

Getting fixture spacing right is the single biggest lever on both installation cost and long-term energy spend. Too many fixtures and you overspend on hardware and power; too few and you fail the uniformity requirements written into most warehouse safety standards.

The Spacing-to-Mounting-Height Ratio

The industry rule of thumb is a spacing-to-mounting-height (SMH) ratio between 1.0 and 1.5. For a 10 m mounting height, that means fixtures placed 10–15 m apart. Narrow-beam optics allow the wider end of that range; wide-beam optics require tighter spacing to avoid scalloping on the floor.

Target Lux Levels by Zone

  • General storage aisles: 150–200 lux
  • Picking and packing stations: 300–500 lux
  • Loading docks: 200–300 lux
  • Quality inspection areas: 500–750 lux

Open-floor calculations fall apart once racking goes in. In high-density racking layouts, aisle-aligned linear fixtures almost always outperform a uniform grid of high bays — you light the aisle where people actually work rather than the top of the racks.
